Winning eighteen league championships, five European Cups, seven FA Cups and eight League Cups makes Liverpool Football Club one of the most successful clubs in England.
This is the football club touched by the greatest managers; the club where the cult of the manager began. Liverpool had experienced success prior to World War Two, but were languishing in the Second Division when Bill Shankly took charge in 1959. The Scot had an immediate and transformative effect, turning Liverpool into the best side in the country in a matter of five years. Shankly ordained Liverpool the People’s Club due to the passion of the its supporters, who he formed an eternal bond with.
Liverpool proceeded to dominate the European scene under Bob Paisley, the quietly ruthless genius. Kenny Dalglish — considered Liverpool’s greatest player — later turned his team into the country’s most stylish when he took charge as manager.
Dalglish might stand in his own league but many other greats have touched the famous This is Anfield sign wearing Liverpool red: from Ian Callaghan, the record appearance holder, to Phil Neal, the club’s most decorated player, to Graeme Souness and Steven Gerrard, arguably Liverpool’s most iconic captains.
It was often thought the beauty of Liverpool’s brilliance was the simplicity behind it, yet few rivals were able to crack the Melwood code.
As Liverpool enters its 125th year, Liverpool: An Oral History tells the tale of the club through the voices of the people who made it one of the most revered in football. Curated by Mark Platt, and told in the words of the people who made it the world institution it is today, this book offers and unparalleled insight into the club’s story.
